How To React and Examine A Child Who Fell Down A Flight of Stairs.Stairs - Wikipedia. A straight stairway with tiled treads, a double railing and two landings in the . Stairs may be straight, round, or may consist of two or more straight pieces connected at angles. Special types of stairs include escalators and ladders. Some alternatives to stairs are elevators (lifts in British English), stairlifts and inclined moving walkways as well as stationary inclined sidewalks (pavements in British English). Components and terms. A stair flight is a run of stairs or steps between landings. A staircase or stairway is one or more flights of stairs leading from one floor to another, and includes landings, newel posts, handrails, balustrades and additional parts. A stairwell is a compartment extending vertically through a building in which stairs are placed. A stair hall is the stairs, landings, hallways, or other portions of the public hall through which it is necessary to pass when going from the entrance floor to the other floors of a building.
Box stairs are stairs built between walls, usually with no support except the wall strings. Stairs may change direction, commonly by two straight flights connected at a 9. Stairs may also return onto themselves with 1. Many variations of geometrical stairs may be formed of circular, elliptical and irregular constructions. Stairs are also provided for convenience to access floors, roofs, levels and walking surfaces not accessible by other means. Stairs may also be a fanciful physical construct such as the stairs that go nowhere located at the Winchester Mystery House. Stairs are also a subject used in art to represent real or imaginary places built around impossible objects using geometric distortion, as in the work of artist M. Jacob's Ladder, The Battleship Potemkin). Each step is composed of tread and riser. Tread. The part of the stairway that is stepped on. It is constructed to the same specifications (thickness) as any other flooring. This may be missing for an . If it is present, this means that, measured horizontally, the total . The balusters typically form a semicircle around the circumference of the rounded portion and the handrail has a horizontal spiral called a . Besides the cosmetic appeal, starting steps allow the balusters to form a wider, more stable base for the end of the handrail. Handrails that simply end at a post at the foot of the stairs can be less sturdy, even with a thick post. A double bullnose can be used when both sides of the stairs are open. Stringer, Stringer board or sometimes just String. The structural member that supports the treads and risers in standard staircases. There are typically three stringers, one on either side and one in the center, with more added as necessary for wider spans. Side stringers are sometimes dadoed to receive risers and treads for increased support. Stringers on open- sided stairs are called . Winders. Winders are steps that are narrower on one side than the other. They are used to change the direction of the stairs without landings. A series of winders form a circular or spiral stairway. When three steps are used to turn a 9. Scotia or quarter- round are typically placed beneath the nosing to support its overhang. The railing system. A volute is said to be right or left- handed depending on which side of the stairs the handrail is as one faces up the stairs. Turnout Instead of a complete spiral volute, a turnout is a quarter- turn rounded end to the handrail. Gooseneck The vertical handrail that joins a sloped handrail to a higher handrail on the balcony or landing is a gooseneck. Rosette Where the handrail ends in the wall and a half- newel is not used, it may be trimmed by a rosette. Easings Wall handrails are mounted directly onto the wall with wall brackets. At the bottom of the stairs such railings flare to a horizontal railing and this horizontal portion is called a . At the top of the stairs, the horizontal portion of the railing is called a . The archaic term for the metal core is . Sometimes simply called guards or spindles. Treads often require two balusters. The second baluster is closer to the riser and is taller than the first. The extra height in the second baluster is typically in the middle between decorative elements on the baluster. That way the bottom decorative elements are aligned with the tread and the top elements are aligned with the railing angle. Newel A large baluster or post used to anchor the handrail. Since it is a structural element, it extends below the floor and subfloor to the bottom of the floor joists and is bolted right to the floor joist. A half- newel may be used where a railing ends in the wall. Visually, it looks like half the newel is embedded in the wall. For open landings, a newel may extend below the landing for a decorative newel drop. Finial A decorative cap to the top of a newel post, particularly at the end of the balustrade. Baserail or Shoerail For systems where the baluster does not start at the treads, they go to a baserail. This allows for identical balusters, avoiding the second baluster problem. Fillet A decorative filler piece on the floor between balusters on a balcony railing. Handrails may be continuous (sometimes called over- the- post) or post- to- post (or more accurately . For continuous handrails on long balconies, there may be multiple newels and tandem caps to cover the newels. At corners, there are quarter- turn caps. For post- to- post systems, the newels project above the handrails. Another, more classical, form of handrailing which is still in use is the tangent method. A variant of the Cylindric method of layout, it allows for continuous climbing and twisting rails and easings. It was defined from principles set down by architect Peter Nicholson in the 1. The earliest spiral staircases appear in Temple A in the Greek colony Selinunte, Sicily, to both sides of the cella. The temple was constructed around 4. An intermediate landing is part of this U- shaped stair. Apron This is a wooden fascia board used to cover up trimmers and joists exposed by stairwell openings. The apron may be moulded or plain, and is intended to give the staircase a cleaner look by cloaking the side view. For a straight flight of stairs, the balcony may be long enough to require multiple newels to support the length of railing. In modern homes, it is common to have hardwood floors on the first floor and carpet on the second. The homeowner should consider using hardwood nosing in place of carpet. Should the carpet be subsequently replaced with hardwood, the balcony balustrade may have to be removed to add the nosing. Flight A flight is an uninterrupted series of steps. Floating stairs A flight of stairs is said to be . The risers are typically missing as well to emphasize the open effect. There may be only one stringer or the stringers otherwise minimized. Where building codes allow, there may not even be handrails. Landing or Platform A landing is the area of a floor near the top or bottom step of a stair.

I always knew something was off about my little brother, but now PBS Digital Studios Debuts MY BROTHER How I Documented 2. Why I'm Doing It Again in 2. Dec. 11th. how i documented 2. What is “scrapbooking success”? This year has been my most successful year as a scrapbooker! Pretty bold statement for a girl who has been scrapbooking for nearly 2. And besides — what does “success” even mean in scrapbooking anyway? Well, let’s talk about that for a moment, shall we? Success is 1. 00% subjective. What success means to me in business or family life might mean something different than what you deem a “successful life.” Same goes for scrapbooking. To be a successful scrapbooker is whatever you want that to mean. Really — it’s true! My personal definition of successful scrapbooking means that I’ve done something to get our pictures into a tangible album (or albums). Regardless of what kind of scrapbooking you do, you should be very proud of the fact that you are doing something with your pictures! If you’re not yet a scrapbooker, or you’ve put that on hold for a number of years, do not despair. There is a very simple approach to getting it done and it’s called Project Life. Back in the day, it was the traditional, creative approach for me (and pretty much everyone else who called themselves a scrapbooker). It was all about layout design and color choices and design elements and details. It was tools, techniques, and embellishments. I would call those successful scrapbooking years because I was doing something with my pictures . I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’m a big fan of evolution! Our family has dozens of scrapbooks in our home with printed pictures that are safely displayed and ready to be enjoyed at a moment’s notice. I’m proud of every one of those completed scrapbooks — and even a few that aren’t quite complete. I love being a scrapbooker! I have no plans of going back and “re- doing” anything that I’ve already done. So all this talk of my “scrapbooking success” through the years? Why is this year considered my “most successful year” in getting our photos in scrapbooks? I have been able to keep up all year long. Because in years past, I would keep scrapbooking to- do lists of each layout I wanted to do, and I would chip away at that list whenever I could. I felt “behind” all the time. This year, there were never any scrapbooking to- dos. Each week I spent about 1. Because of this, the memories were always FRESH on my mind and I spent way less time actually scrapbooking. As much as I enjoyed past approaches, there was always an element of stress. I’ll dive in and explain it all! Wait — quick disclaimer! It is so, so, so important for me to emphasize something before I carry on. There is no such thing as “one size fits all” in this hobby. What I’m about to share works for me. Everyone is different. This is not a post with a “you should do this” or “this is the best way” type of message. This is a post to simply share what works for me, and I’m sprinkling in lots of tips that I hope will be helpful to you, regardless of your personal approach to scrapbooking. I want each and every one of you to have scrapbooking success! I’ll be talking quite a bit about the Project Life App — because that’s my go- to way of scrapbooking these days. I understand the app isn’t for everyone. I celebrate the fact that we have such a wide variety of ways to get pictures into albums. There’s traditional, creative scrapbooking, and the physical version of Project Life (which has also become known as “pocket scrapbooking”), digital scrapbooking, mixed media, smashbooking, chatbooking! Lots of ways to scrapbook and that’s awesome! I’ve been around in this industry as long as it has been an industry. It’s all good. I just know that as you read this today, you’ll pick up tips, no matter what kind of scrapbooker you are or want to be. Promise me you’ll stick with me until the end of this post. My whole goal is to inspire you and if you close out of this window with even just one a- ha! I also have albums for each child that hold all of their “stuff,” but that really is another topic for another day and the last thing I want to do is overwhelm you right now. Oh, did I mention this will be a long one? Now is a good time to grab your favorite beverage and curl up. I’m serious. My husband says I talk too much . Moving on. my daily routine. I take pictures every day. Like I’ve been taking pictures all my life. Some days there’s just the one shot. Some days bring about dozens of photos. It depends on what’s going on. TIP #1: 9. 9% of the pictures I take are with my i. Phone 6 Plus. This simplifies my life in a hundred ways and I’m just as happy with the results I get from the device that fits in my pocket as I am with the pictures that are produced with my d. SLR. TIP #2: 9. 9% of the pictures I take are in horizontal (a. This simplifies my scrapbooking efforts because I’m eliminating time that I would otherwise need to invest in page design options. So what should we be taking pictures of? That’s the more obvious stuff. It’s the everyday stuff that is easily overlooked and yet, the “little things” are so much a part of what makes up who we are! What about pictures at work, around your home, stuff you do out & about? Think about the people you love. When’s the last time you’ve taken a picture of that treasured friend, that favorite neighbor, the teacher who has made a difference in your child’s life? We should snap pictures of the stuff we do, our habits, and our hobbies. And you need to be sure you are getting in front of that lens too, my friend. The list is endless, but you’re getting my point. Take pictures of the pieces that tell the story of your life. TIP #3: Sometime (not right now while you’re reading all of this)! Challenge yourself to take at least one picture each day for a week that you feel is an “ordinary” part of your life. Could be a particular place, thing, or activity. Maybe you even think it’s un- interesting! I assure you the details of your life are more interesting than you think. TIP #5: Take less pictures. In photography, there is often an emphasis on shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. The more you shoot, the more experience you gain, the better you get. As a lifetime documenter, I have reached a point where on a day- to- day basis, I actually try to take less pictures. I am more intentional about the shots I take. And this is turn means less pictures to sort through and this means I’m less overwhelmed in general. If not, today’s a good day to start. I am very intentional about what I share and everything really comes back to cultivating a good life and recording it. One of the hashtags I use regularly is #BHPhoto. Tips and this is how I share ideas on . I go through the Camera Roll on my phone and I review the pictures from the day. I eliminate and delete right then & there (if it’s necessary, which. Now, I’m not suggesting that everyone edit their pictures. This is a step that anyone can choose to eliminate. I choose to edit because this is SO quick, SO easy, and I love that my pictures just simply look better when I take the 1. Diurnality is a form of plant or animal behavior characterized by activity during the day, with a period of sleeping, or other inactivity, at night. Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare, chronic, debilitating disorder that most frequently presents in early adulthood and usually continuous. Facts About Nocturnal Animals That'll Keep You Awake at Night. The animal kingdom comprises diurnal, crepuscular, and nocturnal animals. While diurnal animals are those that remain active through the day, crepuscular animals are most active at dawn and dusk. Nocturnal animals are those that remain awake and active during the night. The raccoon, red fox, owl, and the skunk come under the last category. Why are Nocturnal Animals Called So? Most animals display behavior patterns not very unlike that of man. While most animals are active during the daytime, there are quite a few that display nocturnality. Nocturnality refers to an animal's preference to sleep through the day, and remain active during the night. Though this behavior opposes the diurnal nature of human lifestyle, nocturnal animals add quality to the animal kingdom. Animals like the flying squirrel and mink follow an intermediate crepuscular schedule or a preference for twilight activity. While many animals that are described as nocturnal remain active during the day, as well as the night, there are a few that rely on their post- twilight heightened instincts. The niche differentiation makes additional resources and a special time zone available to the animal. The ecological niche and adaptation to avoid predation are the main features of nocturnality. This kind of animal behavior is mostly seen in the desert regions around the world, where the nocturnal behavior pattern enhances regulation of osmotic pressure in the body in order to maintain a constant water content. This enables them to protect themselves, as well as their offspring, in the course of their lifespan. Otherwise diurnal, nocturnal animals are also most active during the twilight hours. While some nocturnal animals have vision that is easily adapted to night and day illumination, bush babies and bats are able to remain active only at night. Many nocturnal animals have special eye cells called rods that enable them to capture light when it is dark, more than humans or other animals can in the same environment. Their sharp hearing ability enables them to locate their prey, as the latter flee over fallen leaves and twigs. Nocturnal animals like lemurs have special eyes, while bats use echolocation. Echolocation refers to the bat's ability to emit a high- pitched sound which bounces off objects within range, and gives the animal information about the shape, distance, and direction of the object. For example: the owl has a special feather lining on the edge of each wing that muffles sound as it swoops down on prey. A cat has heavy fur and soft foot pads that help it to sneak up on a meal, while the aardvark can actually hear and smell insects as it walks along. Not only do the nocturnal animals get to hunt and stay awake at the cooler hours of the night, but they are also exposed to less competition when they hunt in the dark. The twilight and night hours also protect these animals from predators. They are able to camouflage well at night, to find their way, hunt and flee from predators. In zoos and parks nocturnal animals are kept in special dark areas during the day, which makes them think it is night. This allows the visitors to watch them in action.

On Cloudy Days, Are UV Rays Stronger? It sounds crazy, and many people just ignore the claim entirely believing it to be a myth. It’s no secret that one can certainly get sunburned on cloudy days, but is there any science backing up the claim that UV rays are actually stronger on cloudy days? What are UV rays? UV rays (or ultraviolet light) is electromagnetic radiation that has a wavelength shorter than that of the visible light we see everyday. It is similar to that of x- rays, gamma rays and microwaves in that it is invisible to our eyes. It’s a type of light we cannot see. The most common source of UV light is the sun, electrical arc emissions and is produced by specialized light sources like black lights. UV light can also cause chemical reactions, which is what causes some substances to glow or fluoresce. The naturally occurring UV light produced by the sun come in two different flavors; UV- A which is more common, and UV- B which is more potent. While each has a role in skin cancer and eye damage, UV- B is the type responsible for vitamin D production, and is directly responsible for those horrible sunburns. UV intensity can vary widely with time of day, time of the year, and a locations latitude. Clouds do usually block UV rays, particularly the more nefarious UV- B. On a really overcast day, they can stop 7. UV- B from reaching the surface. Under skies that are only partly cloudy, something interesting happens. A phenomenon called the . Want to share IMDb's rating on your own site? S. The first is UV rays bouncing off, and being reflected off the sides of dense clouds, and the second is UV rays being redirected as they pass through very fine wisp- like clouds. An American Scientist article suggested last year that a combination of these thin refracting clouds high up and thick reflecting clouds down low could result in a significant UV boost at the surface level. Another contributing factor is simple haze. Natural haze and haze caused by pollution can have a redistributing effect on UV radiation. While they can stop UV- B from reaching the ground directly, they also scatter it, effectively turning the entire sky into a source of radiation. Standing out in the open on a hazy day, you will likely will be exposed to less UV- B than if the sky were clear, but in the shade of haze means you’ll be exposed to a lot more – a risk to those living in the smoggier parts of the world. People are also less likely to take precautions against sun when it’s cloudy which adds to that risk. This leaves them open to any UV- amplifying mechanisms taking place.
